I came across this excerpt from a reading and thought it makes a solid point:
“People who are compelled to continually worry about whether they will be able to secure the basic necessities of life are likely to have little time or inclination to fret about pollution… In an affulent society, in comparison, favorable condiitons of life contribute to a growing belief in the need to control pollution. More itme for leisure leads to greater demand for recreational resources and aesthetic pleasures, and a higher level of education enables people to more readily understand the nature and dangers of pollution and the need to protect the natural environment…”
